Mobilizing pro-GLBT voters Mark LaFontaine keeps his cool as race heats up

By JUAN CARLOS RODRIGUEZ Thursday, August 14, 2008

With just a little more than two weeks before the Aug. 26 primary, Mark LaFontaine, the openly-gay candidate for the District 92 seat of State Legislature, methodically makes his rounds knocking on doors in the district on a Saturday morning wearing summer whites and matching Docksiders. “This is crunch time,” La Fontaine says.Getting out in the neighborhoods and attending community meetings is crucial at this point, he said. The race is rife with whisper campaigns and a good amount of mud. Because all the candidates are Democrats, with no Republican opponents competing, the race will be determined at the primary. As if mirroring the rapidly-intensifying race against his opponents, Wilton Manors Mayor Scott Newton and former Deerfield Beach City Commissioner Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed, the temperature on Saturday is creeps beyond 90 degrees and keeps rising. Yet LaFontaine walks at a brisk pace along NW 12th Ave in Jenada Isles in Wilton Manors. Armed with a pile of glossy placards and a list of registered voters, LaFontaine barely breaks a sweat, his hair nearly perfect. His appearance is a stark contrast to Newton, who happens to be dropping off literature at the same time in the same neighborhood. Newton appears red-face and sweating in the summer swelter as he crosses LaFontaine on the 2900 bock of NW 12th Avenue. The two candidates exchange cordial hellos and quickly move on in opposite directions. The neighborhood appears to be desolate in the near noontime heat. Few residents answer doors, but LaFontaine, a professional accountant, makes his pitch to those who answer his knock.“Hello, I’m Mark LaFontaine and I’m running for state legislature,” he says. His door-step stump speech varies little from house to house – he begins by informing voters that there are no accountants in office in the State House of Representatives. “We need people with financial background in Tallahassee,” he says. Then he gives a brief bio: a lifelong Broward resident, the only veteran in the race, his extensive background as an activist for GLBT issues, AIDS and youth. Then he smoothly reveals the detail that could cast him into Florida’s history.“I’m openly gay,” he says. “I’m not running on that premise, but there is a need for the [GLBT] community to have a voice in Tallahassee.” Many of the neighbors recognize LaFontaine. There are plenty of rainbow flags in the portals, and some of the yards and walkways are – for lack of a better word – simply fabulous in the gay context.Jenada Isle and the areas around Wilton Manors are key to the LaFontaine campaign. If elected, La Fontaine becomes the first openly gay state legislator. For the GLBT community his presence can make an impact in debating gay-friendly bills in Florida’s notoriously conservative legislature.“Having a voice and having someone who is openly gay does put a face and personal perspective on this legislation,” La Fontaine said. And while La Fontaine does not consider his sexuality, or HIV status to be the primary part of his campaign, he does not deny that his voter base is the LGBT community.“When you are running a campaign you always look to your base,” La Fontaine said. “Obviously getting GLBT voters is going to be important.”

AFL-CIO Unanimously Endorses Mark LaFontaine for House 92

Oakland Park – Florida House candidate Mark LaFontaine was unanimously endorsed Sunday by the Florida AFL-CIO for the vacant seat in District 92. The Florida AFL-CIO represents 500,000 workers, retirees and their families in approximately 500 local labor unions and labor councils.

“The unanimous vote in support of Mark shows how seriously we take his candidacy, as well as his commitment to the issues that matter to our members,” said Dan Reynolds, President of the Broward County AFL-CIO. “Our message to our members -- whether they’re teachers, health care workers, or firefighters – is that Mark LaFontaine is our candidate for District 92.”

Among the unions represented under the AFL-CIO umbrella are Broward Teachers Union (BTU); Federation of Public/Private Employees; American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME); American Federation of Teachers (AFT); United Auto Workers (UAW); Communications Workers of America (CWA); International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW); American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE); United Faculty of Florida; International Association of Firefighters; National Association of Letter Carriers; United Transportation Union; International Union of Painters and Allied Trades; United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America; and the American Postal Workers Union. The unions represent construction workers, health care professionals, classroom teachers, agricultural workers, hotel and restaurant employees, transportation workers, firefighters, law enforcement and correctional officers.

“I’m humbled by the support the AFL-CIO has placed in my campaign,” LaFontaine said. “My candidacy is about representing the people of Florida on issues like taxation, health care and education. The leadership of the AFL-CIO knows that I’m the best candidate in the race to carry the people’s message to Tallahassee and to work tirelessly on the needs of the voters in the District and that of Floridians statewide.”

The AFL-CIO’s Committee on Political Education (COPE) met this past weekend in Cocoa Beach to make endorsements in key races across Florida.

“Mark impressed the committee with his knowledge of the issues, as well as his commitment to the community,” said Tim Ross of the Communications Workers of America Local 3104 in Pompano Beach. “We’re on board to see that he makes it all the way to Tallahassee.”

In addition to the AFL-CIO, LaFontaine has been endorsed by the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund; US Rep. Barney Frank, chair of the House Financial Services Committee; and Florida Rep. Kelly Skidmore, as well as a host of Broward’s other leaders.

Owner of a successful accounting practice based in Oakland Park, LaFontaine is a board member of Oakland Park Main Street, which is guiding that city’s development, and also has been a member of the Fort Lauderdale Audit Advisory Board, which oversees the city’s finances. He promises to help bring fiscal accountability to Tallahassee and to continue reforms of property taxes and insurance.

Florida House District 92 includes parts of Deerfield Beach, North Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Lazy Lake, Poinsettia Heights, Pompano Beach, Tamarac, Victoria Park and Wilton Manors.

LaFontaine wins key gay support for House Rep. seat

The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund backs local gay activist and former Boy Scout

By JUAN CARLOS RODRIGUEZ

Thursday, May 29, 2008

The Gay and Lesbian Victory Fund, the nation’s largest GLBT political action committee, formally endorsed Mark LaFontaine for State Representative in District 92, LaFontain announce last week.

LaFontaine is facing Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed and Scott Newton, mayor of Wilton Manors, for the district seat. He gathered 694 petition signatures from throughout the distirict, almost 80 more than required to qualify for the Aug. 26 primary election.

Because there is no Republican running, the seat will be determined on the primary election day, although the winner won’t begin serving until 2009.

If elected, LaFontaine will be the first openly gay official elected to the Florida Legislature. He is a veteran of the US Coast Guard and spent most of his youth involved in Boy Scouts, eventually rising to the rank of Eagle Scout. He was later instrumental in opposing Boy Scout policies that discriminated against gay boy scouts or scout masters.

The Victory Fund is dedicated to increasing the number of openly GLBT elected official at all levels of government. Each year the organization endorses dozens of gay, lesbian and transgender candidates. The organization had previously withheld endorsing anyone in the District 92 race because another gay candidate, Gary Resnick, was also running for the same position. Resnick dropped out of the race recently to run for Mayor in Wilton Manors.

According to Victory Fund bylaws, the organization remains neutral when more than one gay candidate is running for a given seat.

However, the fund does not automatically endorse all gay candidates. According to Dennis Dison, the organization’s communications director, candidates are thoroughly screened and vetted to determine whether they have a realistic chance of being a strong contender.

To qualify, GLBT candidates must fill out at least two very detailed applications. Many don’t make it through the process.

LaFontaine said he was happy to accept the Victory Fund endorsement. He is being supported by the Dolphin Democrats, Rep. Kelly Skidmore (D. Boca Raton), and famed Congressman Barney Frank.

“I am please to accept the endorsement of the Victory Fund, because their track record of supporting winning candidates underscores the momentum my campaign has achieved,” LaFontaine said. “Florida has never elected an openly GLBT representative to Tallahassee and this endorsement, plus our strong petition drive brings us one step closer to making history.”

Rep. Jack Seiler currently holds the office, but due to term limits he is running for mayor of Fort Lauderdale. The district stretches along the east side of Broward County from parts Fort Lauderdale to Boca Raton including communities of Wilton Manors, Oakland Park, Deerfield Beach, North Lauderdale, Lazy Lake, Poinsettia Heights, Tamarac and Pompano Beach.

According to US Census there are nearly 135,000 people who live in the district. It has a strong Democratic Party voting base, with 53.3 percent of registered voters voting Democrat.

Victory Fund Endorses Mark LaFontaine

Candidate Also Turns In More Petitions Than Necessary for August 26 Ballot

Oakland Park – Mark LaFontaine, candidate for the State Legislature from District 92, was formally endorsed by the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, the nation’s largest GLBT political action committee and the only national organization dedicated to increasing the number of openly GLBT elected officials at all levels of government. LaFontaine also turned in substantially more petitions than needed to secure a spot on the August 26 ballot, registering 694 valid petitions. Only 615 were required.

“I’m pleased to accept the endorsement of the Victory Fund, because their track record of supporting winning candidates underscores the momentum my campaign has achieved,” LaFontaine said. “ Florida has never elected an openly-GLBT representative to Tallahassee , and this endorsement, plus our strong petition drive, brings us one step closer to making history.”
